Bail FAQs
The John J. Benoit Detention Center is at 82675 State Highway 111 in Indio, on the main east–west artery through the Coachella Valley. It is operated by the Riverside County Sheriff's Office and holds roughly 1,626 beds, the largest bed count of any facility in the county.
Its purpose is geographic. Indio is more than sixty miles from downtown Riverside, and a county that ran all of its custody through one western facility would spend its days driving. Benoit lets an eastern Coachella Valley arrest be booked, housed, arraigned, and released without leaving the valley.
For families, the practical consequence is that the desert cities behave differently from the western county. Where a Corona or Jurupa Valley arrest becomes a downtown booking, a Palm Desert or Coachella arrest becomes an Indio booking, and the release happens on Highway 111.
The facility adjudicates nothing. Defendants are transported to the Larson Justice Center a few minutes away and returned afterward, and a bond is written at the jail rather than at any court counter.

Visiting runs on a scheduled, restricted calendar. Bail posting at Benoit does not — a bond can be accepted at any hour of any day.

Visiting here runs on a published rotation by housing unit and has to be arranged in advance. Bail posting has no schedule at all.
Desert distances matter. The valley cities spread across thirty miles of Highway 111, so a release at 1 a.m. can still mean a half-hour drive for whoever is picking up.
If a municipal department still has the defendant, ask us before driving to Indio — the booking may not have moved to the county yet.
Court hours and jail hours are unrelated. The Larson Justice Center keeps a weekday calendar; this facility takes bonds around the clock.

How a Coachella Valley arrest becomes an Indio custody record.
Sheriff's deputies police most of the valley under contract, with municipal departments in a few cities. Under the 2025 schedule many charges end in a field citation and never reach the jail.
Bookings that proceed come here rather than west to Riverside. Highway 111 is the valley's spine, and the facility sits on it.
Identity checks, warrant checks, and medical screening run before release is possible. A booking still in intake cannot be bonded out yet.
Scheduled charges carry a postable amount. Cite and Release and Book and Release charges carry none; Pre-Arraignment Review sends the decision to a judicial officer.
Most valley defendants stay in Indio through arraignment. Longer holds and sentenced terms can move to the Larry D. Smith facility in Banning.
Once the bond is accepted, the facility runs its discharge queue. Expect hours, and plan for the drive back across the valley.
Premium on a California bail bond is set by the rate filed with the Department of Insurance under Cal. Ins. Code §1800, the starting figure comes from the Riverside County Felony and Misdemeanor Bail Schedule (effective October 20, 2025), and review or reduction runs under Penal Code §1270.1.
Bail on a scheduled charge is set at booking, so a bond posts at Benoit without waiting for the Larson calendar to open the next morning.
The valley's advantage is that custody and court are in the same city. The risk is the westward transfer: once someone moves to Banning, the release is over an hour away through the pass.
Arraignment is the first judicial review of the amount — the judge can keep, raise, or reduce it, or grant own-recognizance release, and bail can be revisited later in the case.
Give us a full legal name and date of birth. We confirm the current facility, verify the amount, and post at any hour. 10% premium, 1% down on approved credit.
A bond written at John J. Benoit Detention Center stays live through every appearance until the case resolves. A missed date can mean a forfeited bond and a bench warrant the same day, with a limited statutory window to bring the defendant back before the forfeiture becomes a judgment against the cosigner. The valley keeps its own criminal calendar, so a Benoit booking usually stays a valley case from arraignment through disposition.

The Coachella Valley's criminal courthouse, in the same city as this facility. Most defendants booked here are arraigned there — a short transport rather than a trip across the county.

Worth naming to rule out. The court lists civil and probate matters there, not criminal — a Palm Springs arrest booked here is arraigned in Indio, not in Palm Springs.

Relevant when a valley defendant is transferred west. The Banning courthouse sits beside the county's primary housing facility on the other side of the pass.
