What 2% Down Actually Means

2% is a hybrid bracket. It exists because plenty of cosigners are clearly stronger than the standard financed tier, but don't have every piece the lowest tier asks for.

The Premium Is Fixed by California Law

Every licensed bail agency in California charges the same 10% premium on the bail amount — that rate is fixed by Cal. Ins. Code §1800. No agency can discount it, and anyone who says otherwise isn't describing a legal bond.

What varies between agencies is the financing structure: how much of that premium you pay today.

2% Is About the Cosigner, Not the Charge

Our 3% tier asks for roughly 640+ credit and 12+ months of steady employment. Our 1% tier asks for 700+ credit, long-term employment, and property equity behind the file.

The 2% bracket is what we write when you're clearly past the first list but missing one piece of the second — usually the equity, or a shorter run at the current job.

What You Actually Pay Up Front

On a $20,000 bail, the total premium is $2,000. At 2% down that's $400 today rather than $600 at the 3% tier — with the remaining $1,600 financed at 0% interest.

Same total owed, less cash needed in the first hour, which is usually the hour that matters.

0% Interest on the Financed Balance

The balance is paid on a written schedule — weekly, biweekly, or monthly — with no interest and no surprise fees added along the way.

Miss a payment and we call you before anything escalates. That's the whole policy.

Where 2% Sits Between 1% and 3%

This isn't a separate price list — it's one row inserted between two rows of the tier table already published on our 1% Bail Bonds page. The full tier table with every bracket lives there.

TierDown on $20,000 BailCosigner ProfileTypical Fit

2% Down$400Mid-to-high 600s credit, steady employment, no equity requiredStrong file just short of the top tier

Important

The 10% premium never changes — only the down payment does. Higher bail amounts, serious violent felonies, and prior failure-to-appear history are underwritten separately and may require 5% or 10% down regardless of credit.

How the 2% Bracket Works

From the first call to the payment plan, here's what the 2% path actually looks like.

01

We Review the Cosigner First

Credit, length of employment, residency, and prior bond history. This takes minutes on the phone and decides your bracket.

02

We Quote the Real Number

You get the actual dollar figure for your bail amount at your bracket — not a range, and not a teaser rate that changes at signing.

03

Paperwork Signed Remotely

Documents go out for e-signature so you don't have to drive anywhere in the middle of the night to get the bond moving.

04

Down Payment Clears

Card, transfer, or in person. Once it clears, we're on our way to the facility holding the defendant.

05

Bond Posted, Release Begins

A licensed Midnight agent posts at the jail. Release processing typically takes 2–8 hours depending on the county.

06

Payment Plan Starts

The financed balance is paid on the written schedule at 0% interest — the same plan structure we use at every tier.

Who Fits This Bracket

The 2% bracket is a judgment call on the cosigner file. Here's roughly where the line falls.

Typically Approved at 2%

  • Cosigner credit in the mid-600s to high-600s
  • 12+ months of verifiable, steady employment
  • California resident with clear local ties
  • No prior bond forfeiture or failure to appear
  • No property equity available to pledge
  • Standard misdemeanor or non-violent felony bail amount

Usually Moves to a Higher Tier

  • Credit below the 640 range
  • Recent job change or unverifiable income
  • Out-of-state cosigner with no California ties
  • Prior failure to appear or forfeited bond on record
  • Serious violent felony or very high bail amount
  • No cosigner available at all
Important

None of this is a promise — every file is underwritten individually. Call with the bail amount and cosigner details and we'll tell you your real bracket in minutes.

The Bail Process Start to Finish

The same process at every tier — 2% simply changes what you pay in step four.

1

Step 1: Arrest & Booking

The defendant is booked into county jail and bail is set from the county bail schedule, or at a hearing for higher-level cases.

2

Step 2: Call Midnight Bail Bonds

Call (909) 643-8359 with the defendant's full legal name, date of birth, and the facility holding them. We locate them and confirm the bail amount.

3

Step 3: Qualification & Approval

We review the cosigner's employment, credit, and prior failure-to-appear history to set your down payment tier and payment plan.

4

Step 4: Paperwork & Down Payment

Paperwork can be signed electronically from your phone. Once the down payment clears, the bond is ready to post.

5

Step 5: Bond Posted at the Jail

A licensed Midnight agent posts at the facility holding the defendant. Release processing typically takes 2–8 hours depending on the county.

6

Step 6: Payment Plan Begins

The financed balance is paid on the schedule you signed — weekly, biweekly, or monthly. No interest, no surprise fees.
