Bail FAQs
The Cois M. Byrd Detention Center sits at 30755 Auld Road in Murrieta and carries roughly 1,111 beds. It is operated by the Riverside County Sheriff's Office and is commonly called the Southwest Detention Center — the same building under a second name, which is worth knowing when a family is calling around trying to locate someone.
Its defining feature is the campus. The Southwest Justice Center occupies the same Auld Road complex. Custody and the criminal calendar are, for practical purposes, at one address. A defendant appearing from custody is walked across a secure corridor rather than driven across a county.
That matters more than it used to. The Temecula Courthouse closed in 2024 and its calendars moved to the Southwest Justice Center, concentrating southwest county court business at the same place the southwest county's jail already stood.
As with every county facility, nothing is adjudicated inside the jail itself, and a bond is written at the facility rather than at any court counter — even one on the same campus.

Visiting runs on a scheduled, restricted calendar. Bail posting at Byrd does not — a bond can be accepted at any hour of any day.
| Bail bonds accepted | 24 hours a day, 7 days a week |
|---|---|
| Facility phone | (951) 696-3050 |
| Also known as | Southwest Detention Center |
| Typical release processing | Hours after a bond is accepted |
| Midnight Bail Bonds | Open 24 hours, every day |
Visiting is scheduled in advance through the Sheriff's Office. Bail posting is not scheduled — the hour a bond is written does not change whether it is accepted.
Do not assume a court appearance and a release happen together. A defendant can appear at the Southwest Justice Center in the morning and still sit in the discharge queue that afternoon.
Auld Road is off the 215 north of Murrieta's core. Give the drive real time from Temecula, Menifee, or Lake Elsinore, especially at commute hours.
Court hours and jail hours are unrelated. The justice center keeps a weekday calendar; the detention center takes bonds around the clock.

How a southwest Riverside County arrest becomes an Auld Road custody record.
Murrieta and Temecula run their own police departments; Menifee, Wildomar, and Lake Elsinore are policed under contract. Many charges end in a field citation under the 2025 schedule and never reach booking.
Bookings that proceed come to Auld Road rather than north to Presley. Municipal holds beforehand are short.
Identity, warrant, and medical screening run first. A booking still in intake cannot be released, however fast the bond is written.
Scheduled charges carry a postable amount immediately. Cite and Release and Book and Release charges carry none; Pre-Arraignment Review routes the decision to a judicial officer.
Most southwest defendants stay here through arraignment, which happens on the same complex. Longer holds and sentenced terms can transfer to the Larry D. Smith facility in Banning.
After the bond is accepted, the facility runs its discharge queue. Expect hours, and expect the pickup at the Auld Road complex.
Premium on a California bail bond is set by the rate filed with the Department of Insurance under Cal. Ins. Code §1800, the starting figure comes from the Riverside County Felony and Misdemeanor Bail Schedule (effective October 20, 2025), and review or reduction runs under Penal Code §1270.1.
A scheduled bail amount is set at booking, so a bond posts here at any hour without waiting for the courthouse next door to open.
The shared campus removes the most common Riverside County complication — jail in one city, court in another — for southwest cases. What it does not remove is processing time on the release itself.
Arraignment is the first judicial review of the amount. The judge can keep, raise, or reduce it, or grant own-recognizance release, and bail can be revisited later in the case.
Give us a full legal name and date of birth. We confirm the booking, verify the amount, and post at any hour. 10% premium, 1% down on approved credit.
A bond written at Cois M. Byrd Detention Center stays live through every appearance until the case resolves. A missed date can mean a forfeited bond and a bench warrant the same day, with a limited statutory window to bring the defendant back before the forfeiture becomes a judgment against the cosigner. This is the one Riverside County facility where "nearby courthouse" understates it — the courthouse is on the same complex.

Same Auld Road complex as this jail. It carries the southwest county's criminal calendar and absorbed Temecula Courthouse calendars, including probate in Department S101, after that location closed in 2024.

Opened July 8, 2024. Civil and family matters are heard there rather than criminal ones, so a Menifee defendant booked here is still arraigned on the Auld Road campus.
