Juvenile Court FAQs
The Riverside Family Law Courthouse sits at 4175 Main Street in downtown Riverside, part of the cluster of Superior Court buildings along Main between the Historic Courthouse and the Hall of Justice. The Superior Court lists a single case category for this location: family law. Departments F201, F301, F401, F402, F501, and F502 occupy the second through fifth floors.
The proximity is the problem worth naming up front. Three courthouses stand within a few hundred feet of each other on Main Street, all with similar four-digit addresses. The Hall of Justice at 4100 Main is the adult criminal court — arraignments, bail hearings, preliminary hearings, and trials. The 1903 Historic Courthouse at 4050 Main carries civil and probate. This building at 4175 is family law and nothing else. Showing up at the wrong address with a hearing in ten minutes is a common, avoidable mistake.
Family law and criminal law overlap constantly in practice but almost never procedurally. A domestic violence arrest can generate a criminal case at the Hall of Justice and a restraining order petition here on the same week, arising from the same night, with separate case numbers, separate judges, and separate calendars. Neither court resolves the other. A criminal protective order does not substitute for a family law restraining order, and dismissal of one has no automatic effect on the other.
We are a bail bond company, so our honest position is that we have no function inside this building. There is no bond posted for a custody hearing. Where we matter is the custody side of the overlap: when someone is booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center downtown and a family law date is coming up, getting them released is what allows them to appear at all. Riverside County's October 2025 bail schedule changed how quickly many releases happen — Cite and Release and Book and Release categories move people out without a bond at all, while Pre-Arraignment Review holds others for a judicial decision.
Official court information: Superior Court of Riverside County — Riverside Family Law Courthouse
The Superior Court lists family law as the only case type at 4175 Main Street. In practice that covers the following.
Divorce petitions, legal separation, nullity, property division, and the judgment process that ends a marriage or domestic partnership.
Custody orders, parenting plans, visitation schedules, and modification requests when circumstances change. Child Custody Recommending Counseling is part of this process.
Support orders, guideline calculations, modifications, and enforcement — including matters brought through the Department of Child Support Services.
DVRO petitions, temporary orders, and the noticed hearings that follow. These are civil orders, distinct from a criminal protective order issued by a judge at the Hall of Justice.
Establishing parentage and the custody and support orders that follow from it.
No criminal calendar, no arraignments, no bail hearings, no traffic. Adult criminal matters for the western county are at the Riverside Hall of Justice; civil and probate are at the Historic Courthouse.
