Stanley Mosk Courthouse at 111 North Hill Street is the largest courthouse in Los Angeles County. With approximately 100 courtrooms under one roof, it holds more departments than most entire court districts elsewhere in California, and it anchors the Civic Center cluster of downtown courthouses.
Its role is civil and general jurisdiction. Civil trial departments, family law, probate, and the Appellate Division all operate from this building, with supervising departments running master calendars that assign cases out to trial departments. It is a courthouse organized around volume and specialization rather than around a single case type.
For families dealing with an arrest, the most useful thing to know about Stanley Mosk is what it is not. It is not the downtown criminal court — that is the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center on West Temple Street. It is not where first appearances happen — that is Central Arraignment on Bauchet Street. Confusing Stanley Mosk with Foltz is one of the most common reasons people are late to a criminal appearance, and lateness on a criminal calendar can put a posted bond at risk.
Stanley Mosk becomes directly relevant when a criminal matter has a civil or family-law dimension running beside it: a restraining order, a custody or visitation issue, a conservatorship, or a civil claim arising from the same incident. Those pieces are heard here while the criminal case proceeds two blocks away.

Court hours and jail release timing are two different clocks. Stanley Mosk runs on a weekday court calendar; the jail holding your family member runs 24 hours a day.
| Monday – Friday | Standard Los Angeles Superior Court public hours |

| Saturday & Sunday | Closed |
| Court Holidays | Closed |
| Clerk & filing windows | Weekday public hours only — confirm with the court before traveling |
| Midnight Bail Bonds | Open 24 hours, every day |
Court hours govern hearings and filings. They do not govern bail. The county jail facilities holding a downtown defendant accept bonds around the clock, including nights, weekends, and every day Stanley Mosk is dark.
Because this building runs on a department-by-department calendar, individual departments can have their own start times and cutoffs. The department number on the notice is the schedule that matters, not the building's general public hours.
Jail release timing is a separate queue entirely. A bond accepted downtown still moves through Inmate Reception Center processing, which commonly takes several hours and runs longer on weekends and holidays.

Stanley Mosk sits in the Civic Center between Hill Street and Grand Park, surrounded by other courthouses and county buildings. Treat the trip as a Civic Center trip, and build in time for screening.
The Civic Center/Grand Park station serves the immediate Civic Center area and is the closest rail access to the courthouse. During weekday morning hours it is generally more predictable than driving in.
Public parking structures and lots serve the Civic Center and Grand Park area. They fill early on court days, so arrive well ahead of a morning calendar rather than planning to find a space at the last minute.
Metered street parking around the Civic Center is limited and time-restricted, with posted street-sweeping and peak-hour restrictions. It is not a reliable option for a hearing that may run past your meter.
All visitors pass through screening at the entrance. Lines are longest at the start of the morning calendar — arriving at your department's start time means arriving late.
This is a general jurisdiction courthouse, and its calendars reflect that breadth. We list only what this building is confirmed to handle.
The core of the building: unlimited civil litigation, personal injury, contract, and business disputes, with supervising civil departments assigning cases out to trial courtrooms.
Dissolution, custody and visitation, support, and domestic violence restraining order matters — the family-law piece that often runs parallel to a criminal domestic violence case heard at Foltz.
Decedents' estates, trusts, guardianships, and conservatorships, including the conservatorship calendars that arise when a family member is incapacitated.
The Superior Court's Appellate Division, which reviews limited civil and misdemeanor appeals from the trial courts.
Multi-party and coordinated matters assigned to designated departments built for long-running, document-heavy cases.
Felony preliminary hearings, criminal motions, and criminal trials for downtown cases are at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center; in-custody first appearances are at Central Arraignment.
Bail review and reduction motions in California run under Penal Code §1270.1, and the starting figure comes from the Los Angeles Superior Court bail schedule.
Bail is a criminal-case mechanism, so for a downtown defendant it is set on the criminal track — not at Stanley Mosk. At booking, the Los Angeles County bail schedule is applied administratively. At the first appearance, a judicial officer at Central Arraignment reviews that figure for the first time.
Requests to reduce or increase bail after that point run under the bail hearing rules cited above, and are heard on the criminal case in the criminal courthouse. A civil or family-law department at Stanley Mosk has no role in setting the criminal bail amount, even when the underlying facts overlap.
What Stanley Mosk can produce are orders that shape release conditions in practice — most commonly a domestic violence restraining order from a family law department. Those orders bind the defendant after release, and violating one is its own new criminal exposure. We walk cosigners through that distinction before anything is signed.
Physically, the bond goes to the facility holding the defendant: Twin Towers, Men's Central Jail, or the Inmate Reception Center on Bauchet Street. Give us a full legal name and date of birth and we confirm where they are, quote the premium, and post — 24 hours a day, regardless of whether any courthouse is open.
A missed appearance at Stanley Mosk Courthouse can mean a forfeited bond and a bench warrant the same day. There is a statutory window to bring the defendant back before forfeiture becomes a judgment against the cosigner — call us immediately. Failure to appear bail bonds →
