Courthouse Overview

The Downey Courthouse sits at 7500 East Imperial Highway, on the major east–west corridor running through Downey. It is one of the working courthouses of the southeast Los Angeles County region, handling matters that arise from Downey and the communities surrounding it.

Its calendars are built from local enforcement volume — Downey Police Department arrests plus cases from the nearby southeast-county cities and unincorporated areas. Routine appearances that would otherwise require a trip into the downtown Civic Center are handled here instead, which for most families in this part of the county is the difference between a short drive and a long one.

The southeast county is dense with courthouses — Downey, Norwalk, and Bellflower all sit within a few miles of one another. Their names are easy to blur on a notice, and the arresting agency does not determine the building. The courthouse name and department number printed on your paperwork do.

No one is held at this courthouse overnight and no bail money is taken at the counter. In-custody defendants are transported in for their appearance and returned to the holding facility afterward, which is why the bond that actually produces a release goes to the jail rather than the court.

Hours Of Operation

Court hours and jail release timing are two different clocks. Downey Courthouse runs on a weekday court calendar; the jail holding your family member runs 24 hours a day.

Midnight Bail BondsOpen 24 hours, every day

Court hours and jail release hours are separate systems. The courthouse keeps weekday business hours; the jails holding a Downey defendant accept bail bonds at any hour, weekends and holidays included.

With bail already set at the schedule amount, posting never waits for a courtroom to open. The bond goes to the facility currently holding the defendant.

Release timing follows the facility. A city jail release can move in a couple of hours; the Inmate Reception Center downtown commonly runs several hours and longer overnight.

Departments recess midday, so a matter not reached before noon typically waits for the 1:30 p.m. session. Plan a half day for an appearance here.

Departments & Case Types

Downey carries the southeast county's local calendars.

01

Criminal Calendars

Criminal matters from Downey-area arrests are calendared here — arraignments, pretrial conferences, motions, and case resolution. The department number on the notice controls the courtroom.

02

Traffic Matters

Traffic citations issued in the area are heard on their own calendars, which run separately from the criminal departments.

03

Civil & Small Claims

Civil matters including small claims are heard at this courthouse, giving southeast-county residents and businesses a local venue.

04

In-Custody Appearances

Defendants who have not bailed out are transported in and returned afterward. Being produced in court begins no release process by itself.

05

Not Heard Here

No bail is accepted at the counter. Downtown in-custody first appearances happen at Central Arraignment Courthouse, and the county's main criminal trial calendars sit at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center.

How To Post Bail At Downey Courthouse

Bail review and reduction motions in California run under Penal Code §1270.1, and the starting figure comes from the Los Angeles Superior Court bail schedule.

Bail on a Downey arrest is set at booking under the Los Angeles County bail schedule, before any appearance on Imperial Highway. That amount is postable immediately.

Arraignment in the assigned department here is the first judicial review of the number. The judge can keep it, raise it, reduce it, or grant own-recognizance release, and either side can move to change bail later under the hearing rules cited above.

Posting at the city jail before the county transfer keeps the release local. Once the transfer runs, the release happens downtown after a much longer intake.

The bond stays live for every appearance on this courthouse's calendar through resolution. Give us a full legal name and date of birth and we locate the booking, confirm the amount, and post at any hour.

If A Court Date Here Is Missed

A missed appearance at Downey Courthouse can mean a forfeited bond and a bench warrant the same day. There is a statutory window to bring the defendant back before forfeiture becomes a judgment against the cosigner — call us immediately. Failure to appear bail bonds →
